Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis Imagery

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is completely natural and safe. It is essentially a state of heightened suggestibility.
This is a collaborative process in which you allow yourself to follow my guidance by using your imagination to evoke positive emotions and rehearse changes in behaviour

Will I be under your control?

No.  Hypnosis is NOT a state of mind control.  Hypnosis cannot make you say or do anything against your will.   The opposite is true.  You must want to accept suggested ideas and actively imagine responding in order to experience the effects.

A common saying is 'All Hypnosis is Self-Hypnosis'

Will I be unconscious or asleep?

No.  You are always awake, aware and in control.  You will hear every word.  If you were asleep, how could you follow suggestions?  You can emerge from hypnosis at any time.  Hypnosis is usually accompanied by suggestions for relaxation but it is not essential to hypnosis.

Will I be in a trance?

Trance is a misleading and old-fashioned term.  It suggests an altered state of consciousness is induced.

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind, deeper than normal during which suggestions are aimed at the conscious mind.  It can be compared to being deeply engrossed in a book or a film and suddenly realizing how much time has passed.    Hypnotic 'trance' (if you want to use that term) is simply  an increased ability to respond to suggestions, usually accompanied by relaxed attention to the ideas being suggested.

What does it feel like?

Hypnosis is not a feeling.  You will feel whatever you imagine feeling.  Most clients enjoy suggestions of relaxation partly because it's enjoyable and partly because it helps them focus on their goals in a calm and confident way.  Many people report the following:-
  • feeling relaxed
  • being only vaguely aware of their surroundings
  • feeling carefree, uncaring about everyday concerns
  • barely hearing extraneous noises
  • feeling focused inwards on their imaginations
  • arms and legs feel pleasantly heavy or light
  • experiencing enjoyable tingly sensations
  • feeling a sense of peace
  • minds are super alert

Will I be re-programmed?

People are not computers or software programs.  People are unique individuals who have learned how to behave automatically in certain situations
Together we identify the thinking behind automatic reponses, which are unique for each client.

For example, you might autoamtically reach for a cigarette whenever you answer the phone or you may automatically feel scared when seeing a spider.  We work collaboratively using a combination of hypnosis, relaxation and cognitive techniques to identify triggers and change thinking and behaviour.

What if I can't be hypnotised?

Hypnosis is easy and anyone can learn how to do it!

Everyone can be hypnotised if they are willing. It has been shown to help if you relax, think positively and imagine the things being suggested.  With practice you will get better and better at hypnosis. You will know you are in hypnosis when you feel able to respond to suggetsions more easily or more deeply than normal.

 Will I be regressed?

No.  I do not use regression.  I focus on the 'here and now'

What is Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy?

Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH) is a time-limited and solution focused therapy.
CBH is a modality of hypnotherapy.  CBH adopts an evidence-based approach to hypnois which assimilates best practice from research on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), although certain aspects of cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy predate CBT by many decades.
The way you think affects the way you feel and behave.  Habitual, unhelpful thinking and automatic negative thoughts can lead to unwanted habits, fears and anxiety.  CBH helps identify dysfunctional thinking, behaviour and emotions, breaking old patterns, developing new helpful constructive thoughts, behaviour and feelings.

How many sessions will I need?

Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH) is a time-limited and solution focused therapy.

During the initial consultation, we discuss and agree realistic, measurable goals and the number of sessions is likely to be required.  The number of sessions will vary for individual goals, however three to six sessions is common (two for smoking cessation).  Progress is reviewed at the beginning of each session to ensure you get the most out of the treatment.

I aim to help you make lasting changes to your life.  Your commitment is essential. I often ask clients to practice techniques and/or listen to recording in between sessions.  This is to ensure my clients make as much progress as possible in as short a time as possible, therefore reducing the number of sessions and associated fees.

All sessions last just under 50 minutes.

I am new to hypnotherapy. What can I expect?

Hypnotherapy is safe and easy.  It is essentially a simple, down to earth, common sense therapy.

Hypnotherapy allows you to experience helpful suggestions at a level profound enough to change your thoughts, feelings and behaviour. All sessions are completely confidential.  To hear someone talk about their first experience of hypnosis, watch this  video provided by the National Council for Hypnotherapy.
