Fears and Phobias
There are different types of phobia:-
-
Specific Phobias (e.g. fear of spiders, fear of dogs, fear of dentists)
-
Social Phobias (e.g. fear of public speaking, fear of social embarrassment)
-
Panic Disorder (with or without agoraphobia)
A phobia is an irrational fear causing stress, panic or simply avoidance of situations.
You may know intellectually you have nothing to fear but still don't feel it.
Phobias are extremely common. Hypnotherapy and desensitisation is particularly good at helping people
overcome phobias.
What are you afraid of?
There are hundreds of phobias, too many to mention. Whether you have a fear of flying, fear of
spiders, fear of the dark, fear of sunlight, fear of interviews, fear of dentists, fear of heights and
so on, rest assured they can all be treated without having to delve deep into your childhood.
Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy deals with the 'here and now'. Many clients who have one phobia
often have other phobias too. This is quite common. The good news is that by overcoming one phobia, it
is easy to 'generalise' your success making it much easier to overcome other phobias.
Face Everything And Recover!
Systematic desensitisation is an extremely effective, easily learned, straight-forward approach for
overcoming fears and phobias. Widely used, it may be the most thoroughly studied of all methods
of psychotherapy.
- Relaxation techniques are taught
- A hierarchy of fears is created
- Starting with the least fearful situation working upwards through to the most feared situation. For example, for a fear of flying, thinking about going on holiday is very low on the scale, booking a holiday is higher, getting in the cab to the airport even higher, checking in, getting on the plane etc.
- Hypnotherapy
- Under hyponsis, we work through the hierarchy, building new, automatic responses of calmness and confidence (a more 'natural' response). Always working at a pace in which the client feels safe, the process is repeated, gradually moving up the hierarchy of fears. Until you are fully confident in testing out your new responses in real life. So once you've conquered your fears in hyponsis, you'll be ready to test them in hyponsis.
Hypnotherapy is a natural, safe and effective treatment which you can use to help you overcome your
phobia for good.
